Biography

Born in São Paulo, João started playing drums as a teenager. At the age of 15, he already subbed his teacher in local performances. His hunger for improvised music brought him to Berlin in 2011, where he soaked up the different scenes of the city for five years. After graduating from the University of Music Dresden, he moved to Cologne to be inspired again by a new scene. There he attends the Cologne University of Music and Dance as a master student.

Awards

Since leaving his home country of Brazil, João has been awarded numerous prizes and scholarships. For ex. “best soloist” at the BerlinerJazzTreff 2012. The winner of the Skoda Jazz Award 2013 with “Octopuzzle”, he was also a scholarship recipient of the Berlin Senate with the Hans Anselm Quintet in 2015 and was awarded in two consecutive years the “Chamber Music Prize” of the Dresden University of Music (2017 and 2018). In 2019 he reached 3rd place in the “Poznań Blue Note Competition” with the Kateryna Kravchenko Quartet, and will compete as a finalist in the renowned Burghausen Jazz Competition with the band “OrganClash”.
